1) Goals. Before anything else, you must have a goal in mind. Not having a goal will
likely lead to little-to-no progress since there’s nothing to work towards. Your sport/activity
rather becomes a chore in regard to what it should be about, personal growth and progress.
Having long term goals is great, but don’t underestimate the worth of short-term goals.
Since short term goals are the small steppingstones towards the end goal. Achieving a few
short-term goals every now and then does wonders for the human psyche (it keeps the drive high).
Next time I’ll delve into more detail behind goal setting, what a realistic approach to
reasonable goals are, listing the differences between and reasons behind long- vs short term goals. Stay tuned!
2) Discipline. Motivation – most people’s go-to to keep the drive going. It might
deliver a quick burst of initial inspiration (the reason that got you to this point). It is,
however, short lived and can only take you so far. Motivation is all about the WHY behind
your actions (why chase this goal specifically). Discipline – carries through till the end. It’s all
about the WHAT behind your actions (what are you doing to achieve your goal). Self-
discipline is the regulation or correction of your behaviour for self-improvement, which is a
more sustainable approach, especially for long-term benefits and progress. You can still use
and incorporate both together as they complement one another holistically really well.
Realistically speaking one can have a constant driving force (hunger) for progress
depending on when and where to incorporate which mode of action (motivation vs
discipline) at which instances – another ‘let’s discuss’ hot topic on the horizon!
3) Consistency. Following a routine breeds consistency which is a HEAVY under-
looked and under-applied value. Designing a routine means you get to decide where you
invest your daily energy. This keeps you accountable as you’re in charge of what your day
looks like. A daily routine adds value to any fitness enthusiast’s progress. The consistent and
strict adherence to a daily schedule cancels out any excuses about not staying on track to hit
your daily fitness orientated chores to maximize any potential growth for progress.
Following a routine is what drives and motivates consistency at the end of the day.
A daily routine is different from your workout plan/program – stick around to find out
what the differences are and how to set up a custom-made routine befit to your specific goals to breed that much valued consistency!
4) Programming & coaching. Without a clear-cut GOAL in mind, you won’t
know which route of programming or coaching to follow. Without DISCIPLINE and/or
CONSISTENCY, you won’t be able to invest 100% into a diet- or training program with all
their accommodating factors (meal selection and timing, rehabilitation, mobility work, form,
technique, execution, etc). These 3 mentioned factors must be considered and practiced in
being the staple of your lifestyle’s backbone, once these 3 foundational pillars are set up,
undertaking corrective coaching with a formulated programming approach will have you soar to new heights!
What is the best training split? What is the best program? What is the best
technique/form? What are the best exercises? All these and more critical questions to be answered in full right here.
5) Basket factors. Nutrition, sleep, recovery, and supplementation also fall under
the same branch as programming and coaching. Yes, these are ultimately the determining
factors to which you progress and reach a set out goal. However, if your foundational pillars
are not top priority, you will miss meals, skip workouts and eventually lose interest. Fully
invest into these ‘basket factors’, by having a goal, discipline, and consistency as your major
driving force – and progress WILL be assured. This will have you go from being a good
athlete to being a great athlete. In addition, without formulated programming and/or
exercise execution (corrective coaching) you’ll only get so far regarding progress since everything at the end of the day is interconnected.
Basket factors is an umbrella term used to bundle a few materialistic variables together
which are DIRECTLY responsible for your potential output. Nutrition, sleep, recovery, and
supplementation are all broad and highly anticipated topics which I’ll cover in full. Don’t miss out!
Summary
Investing into 1 of these 5 variables is a great start to bettering yourself and making sure to
progress in your fitness field of choice. With the complement of adding an additional factor
every time will exponentially increase the rate and magnitude of progression! This is
because the fitness lifestyle is an interdisciplinary approach, where your progress and
performance is only as great as your weakest link! So, invest fully into each and every above
mentioned variable and be sure to reap the benefits!
